The irrational exuberance of the market is driven by Merger and Acquisition rumours alone - according to the Telegraph. I have some sympathy with this as underlying macroeconomic trends are so weak.

Ethnic workers earn more in the public sector - A fine combination of political correctness at its best.

JH - Definitely carpet baggers. Tell me who benefits from PE take-overs? Do prices go down? Do more people get jobs? Do previous shareholders do well?
ReplyDeleteAll in all, no. Shareholders get a raw deal as hedge funds and others pile in at the end. if the co does better in private hands, then why should the shareholders have sold? They are often mis-sold but perhaps Sainsbury's shows they are learning.
Beyond financial engineering I do not see what PE really has to offer.
There is nothing illegal or wrong with this from a capitalist point of view. I don't want PE regulated away; but I have no love for it either and will be glad when the buzz dies down again for a decade or so. Public companies are more democratic, PE can help to concentrate money and therefore power in the hands of the few...
