Like Aston Villa thrashing Real Madrid. Quite an achievement.
With all the bad news re HBOS etc, there would actually be a good counter story.
Barclay's buying Lehmans, HSBC getting Goldman, LLoyds getting HBOS - half the UK banks becoming even bigger global behemoths - at the expense of the Yanks?
Who would have thought it - even if Financial Services has had its day in the Sun, it would be quite an achievement.

ReplyDeleteThis has been a truly crazy week. Lehman's, AIG, HBOS, Merrills all gone as independent entities. Fairly sure ther are more twists and turns to come.
ReplyDeleteBE - rumours are centering on Wachovia at the moment. If you are thinking "who are they?", you saw a lot of them in New York. Gren and Blue bank.
What about this short-selling ban then CU?
ReplyDeleteI've legged it down the internet cafe as soon as I heard on RADIO 4 to put a buy order on RBS. I'm guessing a lot of positions will automatically close tomorrow morning.
Will the ban mean that no one can short the FTSE index as well? I don't see how the market makers can hedge against these bets if shorting financials is banned.

But why is it only British banks that seem to be buying up these remnants? Are the German, French, Swiss, Japanese, etc etc banks not also interested? And if not, why not? Do they know something the UK banks don't?
