Online Dialectics

Several months ago our occasional visitor ToryBoys peeped out from his flak-jacket to recommend we link to Tom P's fairminded-if-lefty blog Labour & Capital. Which we do: our pleasure, we're pretty broad-minded ourselves.

Flatteringly, and with impeccable timing, Mr P has 'interviewed' yours truly ... have a look here.

  4. Just seen this and your comments are interesting regarding the role you see for improved (i'll say that rather than increased) regulation in many areas. There is also a lot of validity in your arguments about the present government having been timid in using the regulatory tools at hand - but you do have to place this against the background of continuing international chorus for deregulation from the financial sector, and limited ability of UK government to act in isolation from others.

But anyway we do now appear to have reached the social democratic/Keynesian position that markets are not entirely self regulating, efficient or self stabilising if left to their own devices. That still leaves room for a lot of debate about what is the best form of regulation ( a debate about which most of our politicians have little clue whatsoever).

I would be a little worried about the deadening silence on this matter which is coming from the direction of Cameron/Osborne - who I suspect have not recognised that days of deregulation are over and may be listening rather too much to their hedge fund donors.

Perhaps now is a good time to take off the flak jacket!
