Kow Tow Time For Merkel

Long-time readers of C@W (Sid & Doris Bankers) will know I reckon that one day someone will simply sell the farm to China in return for a short-term boon.

Don't do it, Frau Merkel.

  1. Are we, too, to become an "autonomous region"?

Former communist seeks to sell Greece to Far East neo-Nazis.

    What a surprise.

  3. They're back in Africa already, Demetrius.

But you know what? Generally I feel they've been playing fairly straight, and largely for the benefit of their own people. It's our own I don't trust an inch.

  4. @ Sackerson - I'm fully with you on this one.

  5. @Sakerson & Mr Barnacle Bill. I'm less worried about it than my best chum is - he's got a reflex. China is imperial yet its got so much of a cultural time lag to get through it's time to relax. 200 years of Africa being fucked up by the white man and it's as fucked as it ever was. China has to start standing at the top table and stop being a victim. Geographically speaking the Chinese aren't a threat and they do have legitimate political beefs with their neighbours, as do we, yet Britain hasn't sat on its arse for the last 50 years.

The Ruskies have got Michael Corleone, the Yanks - crikey, I watched the RNC last night and I swear to God the TUC has more fun going on. Europe is run by skat peados doing non-jobs and Blighty, well, we'll get fucked any way so why not watch with quiet disbelief as the Japs get a beating. The Phillipines go for a civil war, Taiwan gets arseholed, Pakistan gets told to STFU and Afghanistan gets given a choice.

We're so embedded to civil and human rights that some knobheads got the idea it could be exported; maybe it can, as long as the dumb fucks have a religio monarchist bloodbath followed by some hegemonic authoritarians attempting genocide trying to bomb fuck out of some shithole sink estates in the capital city.

This crisis just seems like a recalibration, that somehow Blighty should be involved in policing the world simply because we had the technology. Well, everyone's got the technology these days, it's cheap. That the Chinese are buying land & infrastructure is a sign of weak government here, but that is what we have. The problem for the Chinese is understanding what they want.

If they fix Africa, cool beans.

  6. @Sackers(2) + BB - agreed, broadly speaking: I've said before, better the next C should belong to the Chinese than the Russians

but (as also commented previously) I remain astonished at how timid they are on the world stage, and how much to learn about how the game is played

    they will learn ...

ND, it wouldn't be Thursday if I agreed with you.

I haven't heard the executions by bullet at 4:00am, but my friend has. This century to be Chinese? I sincerely hope not. And no that does not mean I'm a fan of Russia.

  8. Budgie, my comment was a relative one; the post urged Merkel not to sell the pass; and I'm 100% in favour of the West hanging onto its disproportionate power as long as possible

but the Americans have been making a tremendously bad fist of it of late ...

and I do believe (well, hope) that the longer we hang on, the more our civilisation will rub off on the Chinese (- based squarely on the trends of the past 20 years, and strongly westernised Chinese I meet in business - not any type of theoretical or romantic vision of the inevitability of liberal democracy)

  9. Democracy has limits, it's fine when talking about Blighty with its coastal subsidence and its depleted turbot stocks but to translate this bullshit to a country of 1.3 billion on paper and 1.7 billion in reality with porous borders is utter horseshit. Ofcourse they have to rule with a fuck you attitude, the logistics of alternative don't bear thinking about.
