The high cost of insanity

The Government is always keen to talk about de-regulation and getting rid of red tape; I have always felt this to be an Orwellian statement like war is peace etc. Socialists have no intention of deregulating anything as they seek to control everybody's lives as far as possible.

A prime example of this madness is made in The Times today. New laws mean that literally millions of people will now have to have background checks to work with children:

"Instead of just having their records checked, all teachers, nursery staff and youth workers will be required to register with a new agency, the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) at the cost of £64.

Ministers have also decided that thousands of other adults should pay for the ISA ‘seal of approval’ including, most recently, parents who have overseas students to stay under school exchange programmes.

In total, 11.3 million adults will have to be vetted, according to the latest estimate from the Department for Children, Schools and Families and contained in the new report."

So that will be £732 million to be spent on this programme, mainly by government agencies. This all does not even mention that there are not the resources to do the checks in any event, leaving many people unable to start jobs they are qualified for and children without teachers and nurses.

The Labour state belivies by doing this that it is helping, instead it is encouraging people to rely on it for everything and to abandon their own instincts of trust and judgement - all at a huge cost to the taxpayer.

Where was this promise in the Labour election manifesto (don't bother it isn't).

If your children are preschool then never allow them to be in contact with the state education system. Better still, ensure all medical needs are met privately.

Everyone is so bloody paranoid about paedophiles! I am all for preventing kids being attacked, but what's wrong with a bit of commonsense and not leaving your kids alone with people you don't know?

What age are children up to?
is it 15 or 16?

Work experience looks like a thing of the past then. If you need to get a licence for yourself and maybe any one else who comes into contact with a child then would you bother?

What kills me is why, at any stage of these mad schemes doesn't someone try to think through the implications of the action.
Did no one say 'hang on a sec..this doesn't make a lot of sense. How's this going to stop a father putting his daughter in a cellar for 20 years?

Did no one say "£732 million is a lot for a days headline that will be forgotten in a week. Are you sure we have the money. What about those armoured transport vehicles we promised the army 5 years ago to replace the LandRovers ? We could get some of them instead...."

And to cap it all I got a leaflet this morning telling me whow to properly tie a plastic cable tie onto a bin bag.
there is a couple of photos and a helpline and everything.

"This Government is a lemon and I want my money back"

And if we get in a babysitter who's 16 or 17 (with neither me, my wife or said babysitter having an ISA licence), have we then committed three crimes?

It might do wonders for International Relations if it impedes exchanges. In our experience, exchanges were good for Anglo-Lusitanian relations but lousy for Anglo-Frog and Anglo-Kraut.

Could someone please explain the difference between the current

Criminal Records Bureau
"Safer recruitment protecting the vulnerable
The CRB’s aim is to help organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors by identifying candidates who may be unsuitable to work with children or other vulnerable members of society."

Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) "will be part of the biggest overhaul of vetting and barring arrangements ever undertaken in this country.

Protecting the vulnerable
The ISA is an independent body with its own remit and barring criteria. Its overriding aim will be to help protect children and vulnerable adults from harm."

Idependent from whom ? What are those remit and criteria and what are the procedures for appeal ?

Seems these two bodies will be doing much the same thing and each getting a big fat fee.
The CRB requires a potential employee to pay for a new check for any new job ( including for different areas of the same profession eg LEAs and NHS PCTs ) Will the ISA provide a transferable " certificate of fitness" like pub landlords now have ? If so, that could well be an improvement.
But the question remains, why will there be two quangos doing the same thing ?

ISA "securely storing information about people’s ISA status "

Ha Ha Ha, pull the other one.

I'm a bit both ways on this - we need checks for sure but I wouldn't trust Brown's mob to get it right.

Anon - great point. why have one quango when you can have two for the price of four.

We know Labour's form on spending taxpayers money.

James - We already have stringent checks, this is pure politiciking and playing on people's fears.

As usual, this creeping state interference is not only impossible to stop, but difficult to even argue against. When one objects the immediate response is, "So you don't care if our kids are put in the hands of pedophiles or abusers?"
I'm afraid until we find a suitable reply to this response, and all the other similar responses to objections to other state intrusions, then we will never stop the state growing.
