Stumbling and Mumbling

Chris Dillow has an excellent post today on the 'news' that house prices are expensive for 'key workers'.

I can't find much to add to it, except to point out that it assumes that key workers marry each other too. They multiply up the numbers for couples as double the single figure.

Do Doctors, nurses and teachers all have to marry one another? IS this what real socialism is all about?

Hi CU yes " Key Worker " is an insult to everyone else and the scheme is in fact abused by whole trenches of Public sector employees whose jobs are already over rewarded...The tales I could tell !

Worstall also posted about this, pointing out that national pay bargaining means that pay cannot follow local conditions (like varying rates of housing cost).

Calling this a market failure is something of a misunderstanding.

If I undertake a PGEC whilst receiving an extra £5,000 golden handshake I can become a keyworker in our area.

As we are making a considerable number of teachers redundant at the end of the next term (3 large secondary schools are downsizing, and we are having academy's I think) - would that then mean that I am an unemployable keyworker?

If so can I still keep my house and my money?

Crackers that is all I can say - good post - thank you Shani

The thing is, CityUnslicker, are we, you and I, key workers [KEY-WOK]and are the others also-rans [ALS-RAN]?

Do we maintain high levels of throughput in our earning aspectual range, whilst they become socialists?

N - I have heard some of these tales. hoep your own housing situation is going well.

Peter - Worstall made a good point too, this is all about national wages for local jobs; a truly idiotic system.

Muse - I am sorry to hear this, but I think it is a great example of why central planning just produces too much or too little of anything it touches. There is not response mechanism as there is in a market based system.

JH - I am definitely not a key worker. My driving force is to do as little as possible for as much as possible.

What annoys me is the assumption that people marry at all.
