New Labour's War on Christmas Cheer

It started, the opening shots so to speak, with John Reid warning of the likelihood of a large terrorist attack over the Christmas period.
Then Caroline Flint chipped in with her call to make stop children eating at Christmas (here).

However, this seems to have made other ministers jealous, Douglas Alexander from the Dept of Transport overtaking from the inside with Annual Road Safety programme.

Not to be outdone, Fire Minister Angela Smith also chips in with a campaign of the danger of fire over Christmas.

Watching from afar Nick Clegg of the Lib Dems feels the need for a broadside along with the Daily Mail; accusing the government of shocking complacency over UK drinking.

There are more articles on Winterval and pc behaviour that I could point out but the list is hard to choose from although here is a good summary from The Independent.

Finally, the last a present from the Government to us is to be a huge increase in state funding of political parties, see my post below.

I can see a trend here, the government don't want us to be happy. They want us to be scared, frightened and poor. I wonder why this is?

They're a real bunch of fun people, aren't they?

Right that's it. I have heard enough from Flint Face. In November she launched expensive and pointless campaigns for condoms and against smoking and puking. Time to surround her and start kicking (metaphorically of course). Thanks for providing me with the motivation. PS - Happy birthday for when you turned 31.

I'm sure I've read about this before somewhere...a government that likes constantly to reassert its authority over all aspects of life...a people supposed to live in fear and anger...

What _is_ it with power? Why can't these power crazed loonies just chill out and go for a nice quiet drink? Read a book? I've got a good one they might like...

Your links are a bit all over the place, I'm afraid. Several of them start with http twice.

Anyway, I had a bit of poke around and found Douglas Alexander' Road Safety Campaign here and Angela Smith's Fire Safety Campaign here. I'm not sure I completely agree with your analysis, I fear; I thought drink-driving and fire-safety campaigns were pretty well-established at this time of year, and I don't think they're wholly unnecessary.

As for the piece in the Indy, We wish you a 'PC' Christmas, this was quite memorably fisked by Five Chinese Crackers, who demonstrates it's basically an inaccurate rehash of stories the Sun and and the Mail had garbled in the first place.

I agree about Caroline Flint, though; the woman's a disgrace. And I've given up on John Reid and his terrorism threats. Quite what action the public (as opposed to the emergency services) is supposed to take as a result of them, I've never been able to determine. Be extra vigilant, I suppose, whatever that might mean. And be grateful to Dr Reid if nothing happens; and, if it does, we can't say we weren't warned.

James - they can't wait to party huh?

PT - Many thanks it was ages ago. Flint is catching Prezza in the most useless minister stakes.

TD - Exactly. Busy fools all of them

NS - Thanks, corrected the links. Driving and Fire Safety have an expensive update of their campagins at Christmas. As for the PC stuff, the maifesto club, which Iain Dale pointed out yesterday, is a better site than the one I linked to.

They should bring back the public info films from years ago.

The message is the same but at least we had a laugh at them.

What good post. Bit depressing really

"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary."
H. L. Mencken

Some of this is harmless filler.Local Councillors are always polluting my brain with their clear support of good (I am against Fire) and condemnation of evil .Hence the envoroments popularity and the relatuve unpopularity of levels of taxation.

On party funding I very much agree with what you say and the whole theme of poltical exclusion is a bit of a hobby horse of mine as well.

Salutations ye of my tribe
