Nice to meet you, Dominic. You are EXACTLY as I pictured.
A zeitgeist is particular to a given era and explains why people think differently from one period to another. Comprehension between those generations would be difficult, if not impossible - almost as though we were different species entirely.
It's a big word - it sidles with huge attrocities and is driven by memes.
A meme is a concept which breaks free of man and his control. It then controls man. Man becomes subservient to it.
The state of man's mind at that time that he is controlled by meme is zeitgeist.
I think if anything blogging thwarts and challenges memes and promotes individuality.
In real life I am very rarely heard (Except when I play my guitar ! I'm a man of few spoken words) For good or bad I'm glad that I have this outlet. And whether we like what individuals have to say or not we should all be glad too.

Kev - I didn't know you were an adherent of Herder's !!
for myself, I think the point should rest at 'difficult' - it is the task of scholarship to overcome this (admittedly very great) difficulty and it can be done
same goes for other cultures: difficult to understand the Chinese, eg, but we shouldn't abandon the attempt
this is tied up with relativism, moral and otherwise: I tend towards the absolute end of the spectrum meself
absolute truth is hard to find and often even harder to live with, but it's out there

Blogging is anti-zeitgeist IMHO.
