Question Time: Iron Lady edition

David Dimbleby presents Question Time from Lady Thatcher's former constituency of Finchley.
On the panel are Conservative Cabinet Minister Ken 'Europe' Clarke MP, Labour's former Home Secretary David 'people's republic of South Yorkshire' MP, former leader of the Liberal Democrats Ming 'Sprinter' Campbell MP, Guardian columnist Polly 'Pol Pot' Toynbee and Lady Thatcher's authorised biographer Charles Moore, Speccy and telegraph journo.

I can only guess that Arthur Scargill wsn't available.

BQ guesses.
Thatcher's funeral costs. What a disgrace!
Thatcher to blame for pretty much everything, but we'll say today's banking crisis.
Phillpott  - Why did Thatcher make him kill his offspring?
Disability living, bedroom tax, and millionaire tax rates came into effect this week- Thatcher strikes again!

That's probably all they will have time for. Probably not even that with all the posturing.Twitter should be interesting. Always a very balanced, thoughtful, polite and restrained place Twitter...

We run until the summer holiday recess.

This tournament is still sponsored by Timbo 614 {although he has been very quiet lately}

First?

Dimbletie: Mauve.

1) What is Thatcher's most important legacy?

2) Is it right to celebrate the death of anyone, however evil?

3) Has the glass ceiling really been smashed?

4) Is Blair right about Ed Miliband?

5) Would Arthur Scargill fit in in North Korea?

DtP said...

Evenin' comrades.

I'm going for a full on Thatch fest, a veritable smorgasboard of division and revisionism, and to wit:

1) What was her legacy? Did she divide & conquer or regenerate & create?

2) Was deregulation of the city, le grande bang, responsible for the economic clusterfuck we currently find ourselves in?

3) Inner Cities and the scourge of poverty - is it all her fault. Did her single mindedness vis a vis the unions destroy communites that have never recovered?

4) Should she have so an authorized funeral when everyone hated her (except, yer know, the shadow voters).

5) Was her leadership style an athema to the current bland, beige, can't stick a rizla between 'em, tedious, know nothing, fit for fuck all mikons that we have now?

Dimbo tie - Black? Only kidding - a silver affair.

Power to the people and all that jazz, good luck folks.

Dimbytie - red, of course.

BE - yes you were first

- Evil thatcher ate babies and killed miners - should we be proud of this legacy

- evil thatcher killed argies and supported the khmer rouge - should we still love her?

- Is it not right that under free speech people, teachers especially, should be allowed to organise death parties if they like?

- Does thatcher show how weak and rubbish cameron is and was'nt Ed milliband statesman like..

_ is norrh kore a more united and happier country than britian was in the 1980's.

The BBC will get it right for once, no bias at all....

CityUnslicker said...

dimby tie, blue just to show no bias!

Dimbletie: mourning yellow.

1. What's the right way to remember Mrs. T: saviour of the country, feminist icon, or demon incarnate?
2. Why aren't we funding the funeral by public subscription instead of Government spending? (we should totally do this, I would bet that a couple million could be raised, and it would choke up the various memes being passed around on Farcebook)
3. When Johnny Rotten and Mikhail Gorbachev are the voices of reason, does that show we've lost our way as a society?
4. Should we shoot down a Nork missile if fired, or is that playing into KJU's hands?
5. Oh, go on: if Bitcoin isn't the future of currency, what is?

A tough gig tonight. So the questions may try to fit the panel, given they are all big-hitters.

1. Should bankers give up their pensions especially Icelandic ones. (KC)

2. Should Abu Qatada be deported to Jordan (DB)

3. What admiral qualities does BoJo have. (PT)

4. Does Margaret Thatcher have a legacy other than as a 'milk-snatcher' (MC)

5. And a Levenson question. (CM)

Was going to go for black tie but I'm holding out for no tie as wearing/not wearing a black one could send the wrong signals.

Hopefully there will be a wider range of questions than just Mrs T.

Bit hopeful Taff.
Polly's off shore tax companies looks like a good spot. I notice she didn't include her employer in that list.
Left-hypocrisy? They do struggle don't they?

Just before Magg's death, benefits were all over the papers.

gsd said...

Hi all.

1) Tony Blair's "labour's got no direction" interview. Relevant or is he trying to fight past battles?

2) Were Milliband & Balls right to criticize Osbourn for answering a question about Phillpott?

3) Youth PCC resignation - was/is she trying to teach our politicians by example, or just being naïve?

4) Mrs T. Should she have a state funeral? And why can't we lock up the bastards who are dancing in the streets?

Dimbletie - dark blue/grey.

idle said...

Tie: more than two colours, probably purple. green and yellow

1. Is Glenda Slagheap-Jackson a reminder of why Old Labour became unelectable?

2. Cost of funeral - why didn't Atlee get a gig?

3. What Thatcher legislation still in force would the panel now rescind?

4. It's the economy, stupid, isn't it? People must get with the new economy and stop pretending they want to go down't pit

5. Did the Lady actually break down class barriers rather than reinforce them?

Malcolm Tucker said...

Dimbletie - Something with swans

A. Was Thatcher the greatest or worst post war PM. Looking at the panel 2 for, 2 against and a fence sitter

B. Should there be a state funeral?
Looking at the panel 2 for, 2 against and a fence sitter

C. George Osborne..Was it his fault his driver parked in a disabled space? Looking at the panel 2 for, 2 against and a fence sitter.

D. is it right to expect teenagers to be adults? And if it is why didn't someone tell Paris to sort her hair out, she's not a presenter on 6 music.
Looking at the panel 2 for, 2 against and a fence sitter.

E. Was the welfare state to blame for Mick Philpot.
Looking at the panel 1 for, 4 against.

Evenin'

Timbo has been in mourning. Not mourning Mrs. T. directly although I did quite admire her. I'm in mourning for what was once Great Britain. Supposedly our saving grace, even after beating up most of the world and creating an empire, is that we are tolerant lot. Tolerant towards eccentrics, ethnics, ecoloons and even politicians at times. Especially at times of their death or at least immediately after it and before the funeral. The criticisms and haggling over the inheritance usually starts after the wake...

I have been thoroughly DISGUSTED by the behaviour of some the people of our nation. If Mrs. T. were still alive to see it I'm pretty sure it would reduce her to tears. If that's what is left of our nation I don't really want a lot more to do with it. Never felt less patriotic in my life.

So to questions:

1) Should the organisers of death "parties" be prosecuted for disturbing the peace or a similar trumped offence any offence actually we can make stick.

2) Are we suffering the legacy of Mrs T. or was the medicine just prescribed for too long and therefore handed too much of an advantage to capital(ists)?

3) A lot longer on Mrs T (many subject here could be covered :) Miners and unions of course will come up.

4) Blair -v- Millibollocks. "Listen to Daddy"!!

Probably only 4.

Too late for the Tie. Rules are rules! But if I were to guess,10539 Orange with brown Orang-utans!

Timbo614 said...

"10539" - that's where my catchpa answer went!

measured said...

1. Thatcher. Mrs T was told that members of the Cabinet believed that governing by consensus was a better way. Mrs T: “Well, I believe in consensus. Consensus behind my convictions.” Were her convictions right or wrong? How great a politician was she? Ken and Charles will love this one.

2. Could she have done it without Denis? Behind every great woman there is a man. In front of them are Unions.

3. What happens if they do drop the coffin given she will be preparing to roll in her grave? It is sad how people behave.

4. North-South divide. Can we sell the North to Scotland?

5. Does it all matter…. Forget the headlines. How can the G8 effect the actions of a tinpot dictator? The G8 includes France, Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom…not even China. I hope they had a nice lunch. It will be better than any lunch to be had in North Korea.

Dimbletie – Blue. Otherwise he’s a scab.

Budgie said...

1. Is Polly's friend, the King of North Korea, about to use his missile WMD on - well - everyone? Is he a Wong-Un (sorry couldn't resist). Or is he wonewy like his dad the King?

2. Will Frankie go to Grantham, or just to the funeral? Is he even on the guest list? Will he make Margaret a saint? Who else important will be there? Why hasn't Budgie got his invitation yet?

3. Will this QT prove that Margaret Thatcher was the bane of rich smug corrupt statists everywhere? (Polly's answer: Yes).

4. Evil benefit snatcher Thatcher to blame for - well - everything really?

5. Measles - is Thatcher to blame for this too?

Nick Drew said...

Tie - sober/dark enough to count as 'nuff respec (tho' not monochrome)

that is a very sober panel tonite - and it is pretty monochrome

1) round the table - what is Thatcher's true legacy (he'll ask them to be brief but it won't work)
2) what would Thatch have done abt N.Korea?
3) what would ... etc ... today's lumpen class?
4) who / what is the heir?

On balance, this looks like one that will degenerate into one huge amorphous gabfest (and Dimble will let them bumble), so if 4 distinct qns can be identified at all, I'm going with 4

Blue Eyes said...

TImbo, cheer up! Yes there are a lot of horrible people cheering at someone's demise but they are a tiny minority and people you are unlikely to be drinking or dining with anyway.

BQ how does one sponsor this sport? May I put a bid in for next season? Does my logo go on the shirt?

Bill Quango MP said...

Dimbytie - black with pink splodges.
I think Mr Drew has it.

First question: What would the country be like now if Mrs Thatcher had not been chosen as Conservative Party leader in 1975?

Q2: Was 'New Labour' Thatcher’s greatest legacy?

next question: Did Margaret Thatcher contribute to feminism?

Q4: What does it say about our country in the eyes of the world when citizens are celebrating the death of a Prime Minister?

Q5: Something about disrespect at funeral.

Had an inkling they might try a total Thatcher QT. But as the BNP one was such a disaster i figured they'd abandoned that idea.

For those that didn't watch, ie all of you, it was a pretty reasoned and balanced QT. One of the better ones.

Budgie - 7 too
ND - 7 + 5 for tie - 12

Your prize is to choose which three people sit in the front row of the funeral.{alive or dead - we'll hologram in the dead}

Blue Eyes said...

BE - zero?

Nick Drew said...

I think we will have Livingstone, Toynbee and one of the demonstrators plucked none-too-gently from the mob

all forcibly dressed in mourning weeds, bound so as to face the front in a respectful attitude (kneeling), their mouths sealed, and eyelids fixed open

(can we have Gerry Adams & Scargill too?)

Bill Quango MP said...

Sorry BE - 9 + 1 for first + 1 for the oversight - 11.

Updating table soon for all.

ND - The funeral committee approves your decision and adds recommendations that the chief mourners of the front row should also be cremated on the funeral pyre as was the custom in ancient times.
