Benefits Claimants up by 25,000 Q4 2009

Not hearing that on the news; something about a 3000 drop in unemployment.

Those actually not working and claiming some form of benefit is very high...as all-time high I think?

The BBC site report is actually quite balanced. It does say that the labour force survey shows the numbers falling slightly but the claimant count is up hugely...

BBC have got the story in balance now. They even pointed to the rising numbers in education instead of unemployed.
And, to their credit, they did a feature on R2 about people who have accepted lower wages or fewer hours instead of unemployment. There was a large response.

Looking more like Japan everyday.

Sorry it is nowhere near the all time high that occured some decades ago. I think the P.M. was Mrs Thatcher but it may have been Mr Major.

The figures are actually wide of the mark and have been since Maggie was in power, and of course adapted by the present shower, the figures do not contain the unemployed who are no longer able to claim because of restrictions on those who are able to claim unemployment benefit, i.e. capital restrictions ( persons who saved while they were working, instead of frittering it away on must have holidays, high living etc) I was one such person many years ago, it means that the system is slanted at the catch a rabbit, kill it and eat it mentality. There are a lot of jobs in the care sector but the money is basic.

re the usual Maggie rant, unemployment under Maggie was just over 3m - bequaeathed to her by Callaghan.

But the total not working, which in my hurry I should have mentioned, is 8.08 million. That is comfortably the highest ever.

They also forgot to mention the record 8 million inactive people in the workforce on the BBC, which is also a record high.

Decimal points dear boy, the cons are not very good with decimal points, Ihope there is not another Gordon in the offing in a different form

Does the inactive total include the veritable swarm of Beeboids reporting from Vancouver?
