UK unemployment, down again

...and all due to reducing youth unemployment. Really pleasing to see this as it also means that quality jobs or not, cuts in the public sector are just about being absorbed by the private sector - so that is less taxpayer funded jobs and more taxpaying jobs instead.

The numbers are not great and the current trend shows that this rise in employment may not last into the winter and spring - still good news for now.

Especially against such a terrible background of the unending euro-crises and the US fiscal cliff...

It's quite possible that the London economy is overheating.

I cannot find a plumber to put in a new boiler/re-jig my pipework.

I do not know about the competence of G4S, but I was surprised they could not find enough people for the security jobs that were needed at the Olympics. With the fast-track reinstatement of Job Seekers Allowance I would have thought more unemployed could have applied.

Um, could there be demographics at work here? Like increasing numbers of retirements relative to the past?

CU, retailers are forever opitimists, they have to get the temps in leading upto Christmas in the hope that they will be able to relieve their customers of their cash, it will be patchy over the country, the nearer London the more trade there will be, retailers depend on customers being able to buy either by cash or credit.

Don't forget that large numbers of currently self employed will hit the figures next October, when Universal Credit comes in. It assumes that "self employed" people are earning minimum wage for a 40 hour week. Goodbye to the single mum selling handmade stationery at local craft fairs.

I know that my work buddy's son has been on a four year unpaid apprenticeship. He will leave the company as soon as he qualifies and will be able to earn £60k pa on his first job. He has nothing but resentment for his own company.

Unpaid internships seem to be the way of it in many London offices. The kids do not show up as unemployed, but nor are they earning or paying tax.

Parents with spare cash can see them through.

Not unexpected as temps up as Christmas approaches. Lots of extra posties etc for a few weeks.
