What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander {English proverb 1775}

King Obama III

When Obama comes to the UK in April to urge a 'remain vote' I trust Nigel or Boris will remind the President of the United States of America of some of the text in his nation's most revered document.

The Declaration of  Independence

...in the name, and by the authority of the good people of this United Kingdom are, and of right ought to be a free and independent state;
 that they are absolved from all allegiance to the European Crown, and that all political connection between them and the States of Europe, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as a free and independent state, the United Kingdom have full power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce, and to do all other acts and things which independent states may of right do.

..We have warned.. in attention to our Brussels brethren.
 We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us.
 We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here.
We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence.

We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, enemies in war, in peace friends.

We hold these truths to be self-evident...

I'm sure Boris wouldn't stoop to quoting from a mendacious advertising flyer.

I would caution you all, on this weekend, to understand that a declaration - with which I have much sympathy - made on such a weekend resulted in a seeming idiotic, catastrophic failure but ultimately achieved its goals. http://tinyurl.com/hlbmebd

However,the long term outcome has been, at best, questionable; the Northern part relented, remained within the union and semi-prospered, while the majority removing themselves from the union - valiant heroes all - created a state that could never realistically exist without the assistance and charity of its larger neighbour.

Ostensibly, as an Irishman in England I am as unsure as ever how I should vote.

God Save Ireland!

How ironically humorous that you'd use this document - based on the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath - to use as some sort of statement of British independence.

The Declaration of Arbroath was a request to the other (Holy) Roman Empire to remove the shackles of English dominance north of the border.

Both the Declaration of Arbroath and of Independence were effective so you are coming full circle and using template from 700 years ago.

What was it that Lenin once said? "The way to crush the bourgeoisie is to grind them between the millstones of taxation and inflation." He said a few other things that Obama may be in full sympathy with.
