A few months ago we had cause to consider Mandy and his little ways. "Always plotting, always thinking creatively, always strategising" - even, or perhaps especially, when his back is against the wall [are we allowed to say that?]. Since then, he's been defenestrated from the Washington embassy and caught pissing up George Osborne's side street. But - the usual modus operandi - he waited for just a short time before he was back on manoeuvres. As Guido has documented, before the lame attempt to offer Trump-whispering advice in the Speccie, Mandy had been hawking himself around the meejah, and for some reason Laura Kuenssberg and her people decided to gratify him with a big set-piece Sunday interview. (Why??) Another carefully-crafted foray; and when he decided his week's work around SW1 hadn't quite had the desired effect, why then it was followed by another crafty tweaking of his tortuous, oblique "apology". And, as Private Eye noted, for the Mandy of 1998 it was Don't you dare say I'm a gay man! Now, it's Don't forget to say I'm a gay man!
Now here's the thing. These two big self-PR drives, separated by several months, have one significant factor in common (over and above his unvarying MO and the eternal willingness of the meejah to rise to his bait): on both occasions we may be sure he knew full well there was a barrow-load of shit coming his way. In such circumstances, maybe keep your head down? [are we allowed to say that?] No, not Mandy: all the instincts are still to get on the front foot and try to shape the agenda.
And what a barrow of ordure this one turns out to be! Has there been a bigger scandal since Profumo? As the hacks trawl the 3,000,000 new docs, more outrageous stuff turns up by the hour - and how much more might there yet be?
But, you know what? He'll stay down [are we ..?] for a bit: but somehow there will be a dream of redemption and another foray into the Westminster limelight. Maybe just a bit longer interval this time, though ...

I have to agree, he’ll be his usual completely shameless self and try the same old ploy. You’d have to wonder if it might just work its magic once more.
That said, the insider dealing (or at least being an accessory to Epstein’s possible insider dealing and sending confidential government information to him) might result in criminal charges and/or extradition to the US. If he’s deemed a flight risk and jailed, he’ll be passed around the prison like a blunt.
Now that the police are involved, he may find most paths blocked, and it looks like this time it's more than fingers getting burned. It'll be the brave/foolish person willing to go beyond lending him 20p to phone all his friends.
As an aside, I was surprised to see an old acquaintance referenced in the Epstein emails. Small world indeed.

Its truly inconceivable for the political & media classes to be clutching their pearls about My Noble Lord Fumblebum. Do they really expect us to believe that this latest released info wasn't already known to those within The Big Club ?
Apparently Mandelaon was "naive" about Epstein - just the adjective that comes to mind when one considers the famously unworldly Peter Mandelson.
What a fall, for those who remember how powerful he used to be.
The usual vile spectacle of everybody kicking the chap when he’s down.
Gloria puked on the bus on Monday.
When it comes to Mandleson, kicking him when he's down isn't vile, it's virtuous.
I've heard he likes being kicked. Esp. when he's down.
Fnar fnar.
To be fair, we see the same again and again - saw it with Saville, who afaik was convicted of zero, we see it with Epstein, whose sole conviction was for paying a 17 year old girl $300 for sex a week before she turned 18, and we see it with Prince Andrew now. People do like forming an orderly mob. GrevilIe Janner and Cyril Smith both died "innocent" men.
For the oldies here
Q- "Why did Norman Scott bite the pillow?"
A - "Because he thought Cyril Smith was next"
I see some poor sod of a policeperson is to open yet another dossier on Mandelson. Some sort of evidence may get gathered, the tea person and floor sweeper may get interviewed, a few notes scribbled. Maybe even a few nuggets of genuine ordure. Carefully filed away and quietly forgotten, insufficient evidence guv. This is the British way, Mandelson will slither back under some very elegant stones - until the next time. You have to be a bit daft to think most of these recent revelations were not known about - but not widely disseminated.
Everyone knew Mandelson was a snake, a snake familiar with ordure, money and worse. We also have a very unattractive picture of a branch of our royal family. But all this was known and the ship of state sailed gracefully on. The less people know about law and sausages... Pecunia non olet. TBH I thought he was very well suited to the job of ambassador to Trump's White House. A sad day he returned to English air.
A wander over to David Allen Green's site gives a hint of a wider picture and the possibility/probability the FEDs have a lot more dirt yet. Lawyers handle this sort of stuff every day - with nitrile gloves and a clothes peg. The French had a very useful device for such cases - the Oubliette.
Off topic but what has happened to Kev/EK/electro-kelvin? Loved his comments but haven't seen him around here in a long while
Always enjoyed E-K's posts.
Now Gordon Brown has spoken to the police, maybe a decision on Mandelson will rest with Lord "Antifa" Hermer. Hmmm ...
Perhaps the title of the article should have been: "Mandelson, rogue [3]
"Clive said...
That said, the insider dealing (or at least being an accessory to Epstein’s possible insider dealing and sending confidential government information to him) might result in criminal charges"
BTW, the maximum sentence for misconduct in public office is life... wrt "criminal charges". FAR more serious than insider dealing. Mind, Mandy might like being "banged up"...
Yes, it would be excellent to see him — how can I put it delicately? — banged to rights for misconduct in public life. Unfortunately the threshold for getting a conviction is higher than insider dealing and even that has seen cases collapse that were pretty clear-cut.
I wouldn’t give anything better than a 50/50 chance at best, more’s the pity. Still, we can all hope!
Is it too late to change my prediction who'll be PM? XD
Starmer is looking more screwed than Bonnie Blue.

Nick, it clearly requires you to enter the fray for the Conservatives, storming to victory once Labour collapses.
I have some sympathy with the blog commenters who want to be told what on earth MI5, MI6, and GCHQ were up to. What did they know, when did they know it, and whom did they tell?
Anyone could have told Starmer that Bobby was a dodgy spiv...
Conservatives? Anyone? Remind me, please...
OT but the m-word (manufacturing) actually gets a mention in the Graun:
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/feb/05/britain-manufacturing-power-developing-country-lessons-china
Top comment - "Manufacturing is energy intensive and we've the highest energy prices in the western world. We will never see a resurgence until those prices go down."
The irony is, the one Labour person Starmer could bring in to steady the ship. Reimpose order. Calm the sea of discontent. Create some magic and so revive his flagging premiership would be … Peter Mandelson.
And Komment Macht Frei didn't pull it? Good Lord!
I can easily see why they appointed him, in many ways the best man for the job - which is "to lie abroad for his country". But I still can't get over how our security services weren't shouting when he was pinging Cabinet emails on to Epstein back in 2009 or so. Or were they shouting and told it was all in order? That would be scary.
Anon, see following post
